# npm error code E404: package is not in this registry How to fix it.

URL: https://antideploy.com/blog/npm-error-404-package-not-in-this-registry

npm cannot find a package with that name. Check the spelling, because coding agents sometimes write a package name that does not exist.

**What you see**

```
npm error code E404
npm error 404 Not Found - GET https://registry.npmjs.org/left-pad-pro - Not found
npm error 404
npm error 404  'left-pad-pro@^1.0.0' is not in this registry.
```

## At a glance

- **What it means**: No such package
- **Fix one**: Check the spelling on npmjs.com
- **Fix two**: Remove it, or use a real package
- **Watch out**: Private packages are not reachable

## What it means

`package.json` lists a package, and the npm registry has no package by that name. The build names it. It is a spelling mistake, a package that was removed, or a name that was never real.

## How to fix it

### 1. Check the name on npmjs.com

Search for the package. If it exists, correct the spelling in `package.json`.

### 2. If it does not exist, replace it

Ask your agent: "This package does not exist. Use a real package that does the same job." Then run `npm install` and commit the lock file.

### 3. Deploy again

A failed deploy never counts against your plan.

## Why it happens

- **An invented name.** A coding agent can write a package name that sounds right and does not exist.
- **A removed package.** The author unpublished it.
- **A private or local package.** A package that exists only on your machine, or in a private registry, cannot be installed on the build server.

### Could this be a security problem?

If you did not choose the package, check what it is before you install a real package with a similar name. Names that nearly match popular packages are sometimes used to trick people.

### Does this failed deploy cost anything?

No. Failed deploys never count against your plan.

### How do I find the right package?

Search npmjs.com for what you need, then ask your agent to use a real package that does the same job, run `npm install` and commit the lock file.
